It's been around 2 years since I found this website called TV Tropes and it's safe to say that that day was one glorious and very overwhelming day.
But what is Tv Tropes about and what are tropes? In their own words:
And, obviously enough, the site is a catalog of tropes, a wiki. Now, despite the name being TV Tropes, you can find tropes in all sorts of media from music to webcomics (there are even entries on actors and some bands, not to mention authors and other websites like tumblr and livejournal), you can also find some entries on internet fads (memes, if you will).
The thing about the website is that it's a maze of links, by which I mean is that once you click on that image up there and search for something (say, Harry Potter ), you'll find yourself trapped inside the site going from page to page until you find yourself browsing the Darth Wiki entries 3 days later. It's so worth it, though.
Granted that much like everything ever, TV Tropes has its flaws in the shape of edits (remember the site is a wiki) and sometimes the contents of some pages tend to be a little too biased, but that affects mostly pages of works with large and controversial fanbases. My advice is to take more subjective tropes with a grain of salt when applied without much explanation to the page of a work.
Other than that, Tv Tropes is a great way to spend your time when you have absolutely nothing to do and it's a great place search for things you want to check out and want to make sure are worth it or if you're just searching for a more in depth (and humorous) view of it.
Fair warning, though: if you end up enthralled by TV Tropes you will most likely use tropes in your everyday dialogue. In their defense they do warn you about it.

But what is Tv Tropes about and what are tropes? In their own words:
Tropes are devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members' minds and expectations. On the whole, tropes are not clichés. The word clichéd means "stereotyped and trite." In other words, dull and uninteresting. We are not looking for dull and uninteresting entries. We are here to recognize tropes and play with them, not to make fun of them.
