Winter is coming

I know this is old news, but Game of Thrones is amazing tv show that it deserves its own post. Consider it a way to prepare yourself for the season premiere come April.

Game of Thrones is a tv show taht airs on HBO and it's based on the fantasy series by George R. R. Martin called A Song of Ice and Fire, which currently consists of five novels out of the intended seven. The show premiered earlier this year and was met with both critical and public acclaim - it was even awarded two Emmys for Outstanding Main Title Design and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (won by Peter Dinklage)and nominated for eleven more.

What is Game of Thrones about, though?

In the land of Westeros, the seasons last for years. The story opens with the threat of a long winter fast approaching. The Hand of the King, Jon Arryn, has unexpectedly died. King Robert ventures north to Winterfell to name his old friend, Eddard Stark, his new Hand and second in command. Despite the concerns of his wife, Catelyn, Eddard reluctantly accepts his new title out of duty. Whilst there, he uncovers evidence that Jon Arryn was murdered—and that the hand behind Arryn's death may now be poised to strike the king.
The series was adapted for television by David Benioff and Dan Weiss. In describing the series to newcomers, Benioff jokingly called it "The Sopranos meets Middle-Earth."  source

People who have read the books tell me that the show is faithful to them, as much as it can possibly be, anyway. I have yet to read them so all I can say comes from the mind of a viewer, not a reader.

With that out of the way, Game of Thrones is a very intense show, mostly because every episode gives a lot of information to digest and it has a lot of characters. The first and only season so far only has only thirteen episodes, but HBO works with a longer format than the usual 42-minute long drama series, GoT has almost a hour per episode. I watched it the span of two days, but I definitely don't recommend doing so if you can help it - savor it.

The production in itself is fantastic, but then again, it is a HBO series. I don't really have problems with the series, it's well-written (and adapted) and the characters are believable. I can't say I adore all the characters because I trully despise some of them, while others are lovely. What matters, though, is that there is a character for every taste: from the naive teenagers to the extravagant monarchs.

Honestly, it was the best show of the year - April can't come fast enough.
